11 design students showcase prototypes at Scandinavia's most important furniture fair

For the tenth year on a row BA students at Bergen Academy of Art and Design are qualified to showcase their furniture at the Stockholm Furniture Fair. This is the most important arena for furniture producers and designers in Scandinavia. The fair takes place on 5-9 February 2013.

"We have good experience with exhibiting on the Furniture Fair in Stockholm, says Project Leader Professor Dave Vikøren. - The fair is a good arena for the students to show their design, and to tie valuable connections. Last year several of the students' works attracted attention and one of the objects is now in production."

Light wood and clever solutions are key words for this year's contributions from the students at Bergen Academy of Art and Design. The designs range from integrated sitting comfort, embellished lounge furniture, childhood memories and the revival of traditional furniture making.

The pieces of furniture shown at Greenhouse are full scale prototypes made by the students, mainly at the Academy's workshops.

The Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair is the world's largest gathering for Nordic design. Students and newly established designers get a unique opportunity to tie connections amongst producers and show themselves before media and others within the industry.

The fair has positioned itself as the largest fair for Scandinavian design in the world.

The 11 students are attending their third year of a bachelor degree in design specialising in furniture and interior design at KHiB.

Staff involved in the project
Project leader Professor Dave Vikøren
Adjunct Professor Steinar Hindenes
Research Assistant Svein Petter Knudsen
Assistant professor and wood works technician Øivind Eide
Metallworks technician Svein Orrebakken

These pieces of furniture are shown at the furniture fair in Stockholm from 5 till 9 February 2013.

Stine Aas: 'Duno'
The inspiration for the chair 'Duno' comes from a pillow. It surrounds you and offers you a tactile experience. Down and feathers are used in combination with other soft fillers to evoke the feeling of security and comfort. DUNO is dressed in felted wool with an exaggerated edge round all four sides. The legs are constructed from light birch.

Materials: birch, wool felt, down. Size: H: 670 mm, W: 720 mm, L: 750 mm

Liza Fredrikke Rosenkilde Christensen: 'Quiddity'
It's the quiddity* of a childhood memory embracing the contents of sideboards found in every home. With it's homogeneous appearance in natural birch, the user experience is directed towards the moment when the doors opens revealing it's inner space covered with glowing copper, just as imagined during those childhood years.  *Quiddity (n.) - the nature or very essence of something.

Materials: birch and copperplate. Size: 118 x 62 x 38

Marie Hovengen Møller: 'Waft'
Balancing between the soft and the sharp, Waft is a lounge chair composed of a laminate ash shell and a metal base. With its floating lightness, Waft is sculptural, simple and elegant. The split introduces an unknown element that encourages curiosity and invites conversation. Waft provides a comfortable sitting experience, regardless of the location in which it is placed.

Juni-Glessing-Hanstvedt_small.jpg

Juni Glessing Hanstvedt: 'Moto'
'Moto' is a combination of a sofa and a bench. It is inspired by old Danish classics and new Nordic design. A solid oak bench is covered with a tempur-like mattress that only reveals the wood on the sides. A loose wooden board can easily be moved and changed from a table to a backrest. The construction offers both relaxed sitting posture and a more formal use. This makes the furniture suitable for both private and public rooms.

Materials: oak, leather, steel, foam, wool fabric
Size: H: 460 mm, W: 1500 mm, D: 600 mm

Caroline-Langfeldt-Carlsen_small.jpg

Caroline Langfeldt Carlsen: 'Tilt'
'Tilt' is a flexible lamp with a lean design. The lamp came from the idea of something simple, but yet it's a multi-functional product. The lamp itself is divided in two different parts joined together by magnets, and the smallest part you can detach and bring with you to give light where it's needed.

Materials: maple, opal, acryl. Size: H: 1530 mm, W: 160 mm, D: 80 mm

Hedda-Torgersen_small.jpg

Hedda Torgersen: 'Boo'
Playfulness and dynamics is what makes 'Boo' - a lamp that comes in a floor and table version. A rotating lampshade made of porcelain or Corian gives you a direct lighting and the translucency of the material also gives a warm, welcoming light to the room. With its angled legs, movable head and cord hanging like a tale, BOO gets an anthropomorphic character.

Materials: heltre ask, porselen, corian. Size: H: 500 mm & 1300 mm, B: 190 mm & 300 mm, L: 300 mm & 600 mm.

Charlotte-Lande-Andersen_small.jpg

Charlotte Lande Andersen: 'Sway'
'Sway' allows you to sit both up straight and more relaxed, due to the fact that the seat follows you. The base is made in solid birch and the seat is birch plywood, held together by rope. It is suitable for public spaces and in private homes. The idea behind SWAY is to give the user a surprise element, thus the moving seat.

Materials: solid birch, birch plywood, plastic hemp . Size: H: 800mm, W: 730mm, D: 940mm

Erik_Sand_small.jpg

Erik Sand: 'Furu'
'Furu'is a chair made to display the beauty and versatility of the noble Norwegian pine. Adding the finest aniline leather, I hope to procure the Pine the respect and humility it deserves. Both materials are given a minimum of treatment, which allows them to evolve with each other, and making each and every craft unique.

Materials: Norwegian pine, untreated aniline leather. Size: H: 670, D: 740, W: 740

Philipp-Bastian-von-Hase_small.jpg

Philipp von Hase: 'Trialog'
'Trialog' is a three legged wooden chair designed for reverse sitting. Its back rest also serves as an armrest. When sitting in conventional chairs we often start to sink down or don't know where to put our arms and hands. Reverse sitting leads to a more upright body posture and can improve body language; for example in social group settings or consensus discussions. The single chair leg in the back allows you to use your own legs while sitting the other way around. 'Trialog' is a design discussion between the physical, psychological and conceptual form. which results in an ecological, empowering and ergonomic piece of handcrafted furniture design.

Materials: walnut, maple. Size: H: 740 mm, W: 420 mm, D: 500 mm
