Information for applicants to the Master's programme in Fine Art

Independent artistic work - The Master’s project – is the major component of the programme. Each student defines her/his own artistic project which is developed over the two-year period through personal study, experimentation, critique and discussion with tutors and fellow students.

Admission Process 2013

  • Application deadline: 1 February
  • Invitation for interviews: will be sent week 8
  • Interviews: to be held in week 10 (4 - 8 March)
  • Offer of a study place: will be annonsed on the application web in week 11


Admission Requirements

The Master in Fine Art builds on a Bachelor in Fine Art or other relevant education corresponding to 180 study credits.

Applicants are assessed on the basis of a written Statement of Motivation, submitted documentation of relevant artistic production (portfolio), and an interview.

Requirements for the Statement of Motivation
The statement should demonstrate:

  • Why you are applying to the MA at KHIB and what expectations you have for MA studies at KHiB
  • How you work artistically; what methods, media etc. you intend to use
  • Your critical reflections and thoughts around your artistic work to date
  • Which artistic themes or questions you propose to investigate during your MA studies
  • What context you relate your artistic practice to


Requirements for the Portfolio
Your portfolio should include documentation of relevant artistic production that demonstrate your academic qualifications for carrying out an independent MA project. You should save your portfolio on a memory stick or CD/DVD and put it in an envelope adressed to:

Remember also that you have to send the form showing the content of your portfolio together with the saved portfolio.

Language Requirements
In order to be able to participate in the MA programme, you must have a good understanding of a Scandinavian language  and/or English upon commencement of the studies. English and Norwegian will be used in seminars. Tutoring will be offered in English and Norwegian.

Application and Admission
Before the deadline the applicant have to fill in the online application form. The portfolio must be sent in an envelope saved on a DVD or a memory stick. Short listed applicants will be invited to an interview at KHiB.The interviews will take place in week 10 (4 - 8 March). All documentation must be clearly marked with your application number (given to you in the email from the application web). Mark the envelope clearly: "No commercial value" and the name of the programme you are applying for. Admission will be determined by an overall assessment of the applicant's qualifications, the quality of previous artistic work demonstrated by submitted documentation, the statement of motivation and the interview.
