Heli Rekula was appointed Professor at Subject Area Photography for a six-year period October 2009.
Heli Rekula is a Finnish visual artist (b. 1963 in Helsinki) and a full-time Professor of Photography at Department of Fine Art, Bergen Academy of Art and Design since October 2009.
Heli Rekula works in parallel in varied photographic media: photography, video and film. Video also as spatial installation involving sound, built elements and structures. She often combines still photography and moving images within one project and while working around a theme applying an immediate connection to the visual aesthetics between two diverse presentations. The visual aesthetics is often in a discursive relation to the subject matter of each theme.
Heli Reula´s work can be divided into two categories: staged photography and landscape works. The categorisation here originates from two different kinds of practices in the working process.
Heli Rekula´s work has over the past 20 years been exhibited extensively internationally. Besides gallery and museum exhibitions, her film and video works have been shown in numerous festivals and screenings around the world.
In 2001 she participated in the 49th Venice Biennale, the main exhibition Plateau of Humankind curated by Harald Szeemann. In 2002 she was the recipient of the Ars Fennica Award, appointed by Robert Storr. Heli Rekula´s award-winning work In Between Worlds, was a video of a young autistic man and a compilation of landscape video and photography.
Heli Rekula held a mid-career retrospective DESERT, works from 1989-2004 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki, Finland, spring 2005. The same year she was awarded the State Prize for Photography in Finland. In 2011 Rekula was short listed for the Carnegie Art Award 2012 and participated in the touring exhibition in Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki and Copenhagen.

Artistic Research Focus
Heli Reukula´s artistic research focuses various views on the relation of work processes and the final presented work of art in photography and thematically related work in film and video.
Artistic Research Projects
Rekula is currently working in paralelll with several artistic research projects. Absent Bodyis investigating the relationship between work processes and the finalized work of art, focusing staged and performed photography.
The more recent project, In Hemingway´s Garden, is looking into methods and practices in landscape themed work. Until now Heli Rekula has presented single images of various landscape photographs and videos in different combinations, in different presentations and exhibitions, allowing the photographic recordings, ´the notes´, to pass on their stories. Now the origins of the work are in a singular place, a landscape, which no longer holds only as an´experiential note´ but operates as a source and a reference to the whole body of work.
Hemingway´s Garden will be presented in 2013, first as a solo exhibition at Helsinki Contemporary, Finland, in August and later the same year, in October, at Kabuso Art Centre in Hardanger., Norway. In January 2014 the exhibition will be on display at Oslo Kunstforening, Norway.
Since both research projects are ongoing, these presentations are not conclusions, but more to be seen as results in-between research processes.
