International networks within higher education

Bergen National Academy of the Arts is part of several international networks in the Nordic-Baltic region and Northern Europe.

Kunsthøgskoleutdanninger i Norden (KUNO) represents a system of co-operation, exchange and professional debate within higher art education in the Nordic-Baltic region. At present KUNO comprises 16 fine art academies.

KUNO's objectives are to Promote contact and co-operation in higher art education, Intensify knowledge about higher art education, Support a debate about higher art education on a high professional level, Give students a high level of flexibility in making use of curricular offers at all Fine Art academies in the network, Accentuate ideas for contemporary Art education as they are developed at the Nordic-Baltic institutions for higher art education in an international / European context.

European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA) is the primary independent network organisation for higher arts education. With over 300 members in 47 countries, it represents some 300,000 students. ELIA advocates the arts on the European level, creating new opportunities for its members and facilitating the exchange of best practices. Together with its member institutions, ELIA initiates conferences, symposia, publications and research projects, targeting all sectors of the higher arts education community - artists, teachers, leaders, managers and students - as well as the wider public.

Representing all disciplines in the arts, ELIA has established links with other discipline networks in Europe and worldwide.

Nordic/Baltic Network of Art and Design Education: The purpose of the Cirrus Network is to continue a very successful network of higher educational institutions within art and design and architecture initiated in 1990. Cirrus is a team of 22 institutions of higher education from all corners of the Nordic and Baltic countries founded in 1990.  The main purpose is to sustain a global powerhouse in design through education and research in the Nordic-Baltic region.

Cirrus is also a space for people to meet - for students and teachers to exchange ideas and knowledge. The Cirrus schools develop their education and research by supporting each other. They collaborate on important up-to date issues together with commerce and industry, culture and other actors belonging in the spheres of art, design and media.

International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media: Cumulus is the only global association to serve art and design education and research. It is a forum for partnership and transfer of knowledge and best practices. Cumulus consists currently of 176 members from 44 countries.

Cumulus aims at building and maintaining a dynamic and flexible academic forum which would bring together top level educational institutions from all parts of the world. Cumulus collaborates not only with institutions and organizations from the field of art, design and media; the encouragement of co-operation with industry and business is important as well.
